Company C of 116th Regiment arrives at 7:10 am
in very good conditions on Dog White
Company C of 116th Reg. (page 2521) arrived at 7:10 a.m. on Dog White, 1 km east of its Dog Green goal, a mistake that proved very beneficial.
One of its 7 barges encountered a mined obstacle and was delayed for 20 minutes by manoeuvring to free themselves without blowing up the mines (these mines subjected twice a day to the tide had often become defective).
The other barges arrived rather grouped, suffering only an accident when a barge was thrown by the ressack on an obstacle ramp and capsized on the side, throwing the men and equipment into the deep water from 1.50 to 1.80 m. This section had been equipped to clean the Vierville Valley and all its flame-throwers, demolition charges, "bangalore" explosive poles and mortars were lost.
The German fire was light, because the Company was in an area smoky by grass fires on the cliff. The casualties, killed and injured, amounted to only 5 or 6 during the landing and crossing of the beach. No other troops were near her; only 4 or 5 tanks were in sight. Gathered on a front of about 100 meters (about where the monument of the 1st cemetery is located), the men sheltered behind a wall of tree trunks, 1m high and reorganized. Their equipment was generally intact, the sections were well assembled and they were materially ready to fight.
